Logical Fallacies behind Alternative Medicines
(
Shopping-NewsWire.com
, July 29, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Dr Paul Offit, a pediatrician and researcher at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, has launched an assault on dietary supplements and megavitamins in the United States. Last Monday, he was in Washington, D.C. to promote his latest book: Do You Believe in Magic? The Sense and Nonsense of Alternative Medicine. "If you take large quantities of vitamin A, vitamin E, beta carotene [or] selenium you increase your risk of cancer, risk of heart disease, and you could shorten your life," says Dr Offit. He says that recent studies have shown that dietary supplements and vitamins seldom help and frequently damage an individual’s health.
Yet it has become the status quo belief that these products will improve their health. Therefore, he has decided to challenge the forged beliefs of "the church of vitamins and supplements." Offit is the co-inventor of a rotavirus vaccine and an infectious disease specialist. He is famous for publicly challenging anti-vaccine groups, which claim a link between autism and childhood vaccines. This has often put him up against activists such as actress Jenny McCarthy over the years. McCarthy has become a spokesperson for many of the groups.
A 1994 law exempts manufacturers of dietary supplements from the scrutiny of the FDA and its regulation of medicines, Offit says. The manufacturers can claim the supplements support health even when the logic behind the claim is a fallacy. A government study, for example, proved that garlic supplements do not lower cholesterol; yet makers of a garlic supplements claim they "support cardiovascular health." The sad part of this type of advertising is that a range of FDA-approved statin drugs actually do what garlic supplements claim to do.
“All natural” claims are another source of misleading logic in advertising that is growing out of control. For example, almond producers claim that the nuts are a natural source of vitamin E. However, you would have to eat seventeen pounds of almonds to receive the same amount of vitamin E in one capsule of a supplement. "So how is this a natural thing to do?" Offit says.
